The basics

Common questions about endometriosis

Curious about endometriosis, take a look at common questions below.

What is endometriosis?

Endometriosis is a long-term condition in which tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other places, most often in the pelvis. It can cause pelvic pain, painful periods, fatigue and, for some people, difficulty getting pregnant.

What are the symptoms of endometriosis?

Common symptoms include pelvic pain, painful or heavy periods, pain during or after sex, pain when using the toilet, bloating, fatigue and difficulty getting pregnant. Some people have few or no symptoms.

What causes endometriosis?

The exact cause is not known. Several factors may play a part, including hormones, the immune system, genetics and how menstrual tissue moves in the body. It is not contagious and is not caused by anything you did.

Is endometriosis serious?

Endometriosis is not usually life-threatening, but it can seriously affect quality of life, mental health and fertility. Treatment and support can make a real difference.

Can endometriosis be cured?

No. There is currently no cure, but treatments such as pain relief, hormone medicines and surgery can help manage symptoms. Symptoms often ease after menopause.

Can you get pregnant with endometriosis?

Yes. Many people with endometriosis conceive naturally, though it can make it harder for some. A fertility specialist can discuss options if you are having difficulty.

Is endometriosis hereditary?

Having a close relative with endometriosis can increase the chance of developing it, but many people with the condition have no family history. Genetics are only one part of the picture.
